Blank Canvas, York

Currently under construction

Retired owners of this newly renovated property required a new garden to replace a space previously uncared for and unused. With one eye on future mobility, the owners wanted a beautiful garden that would be entirely accessible now and into the future. Smooth paving, wide pathways, and easy transitions between seating areas, ensure the garden is easily navigable.

Planting is low maintenance, with plenty of evergreen planting to carry the interest throughout the year. The clients did not like grasses, so the softness and movement associated with them needed to come from perennials. Trees toward the rear of the garden form copse of sorts, also working as a screen to neighbouring houses. These are up-lit to provide interest from the main living area of the house.

The hedge at the bottom of the garden provides a division of space between the main garden and the functional area. It also provides a green backdrop for the planting in the main garden. The functional area with utilitarian paving contains a substantial brick shed, a heat pump, and composting.
