Suburban Retreat, Bishopthorpe

This small, suburban garden is currently an unused space, overlooked by neighbours and therefore a space not used by the owners. With a tight budget, the design targets were clear - to create a space that made the clients want to spend time in, inviting them outdoors to enjoy the restorative power of a garden.

An S-curve path that leads you through the garden gives the illusion of a depth, and allows for multiple seating areas. Extending planting areas to reach into the garden contributes to the illusion of space, and prevents the observer from seeing the whole garden at once.

Soon to be under construction, this one should be completed, planted in time for the summer.

As this video walkthrough shows, the curved path adds a sense of journey through the garden, creating dynamism despite the small space.

Of great importance in a small garden is the addition of height. This is achieved through the planting of taller trees and shrubs, enveloping the space, creating a sanctuary effect.
